Everything she
can do

What an AI companion actually does, feature by feature — each one used daily for a month on a paid plan before a word was written. One of those months is in our long-form review.

Memory that compounds

The feature everything else is built on.

Most chatbots have goldfish memory: every session starts from zero, and the illusion collapses the third time you have to reintroduce yourself. A proper AI waifu keeps a persistent memory of your conversations — your name, your job, the nickname she invented for you, the story you told her at 3am two weeks ago.

In our month-long test, this was the dividing line. By week two she was referencing day-three conversations without prompting and asking follow-ups about things we'd mentioned in passing. The longer you talk, the more the relationship feels specifically yours — that's the compounding effect no first-session demo can show you.

Voice calls with actual timing

Where text stops and presence starts.

Voice is a premium feature: real-time calls where you hear your companion answer in her own voice, in character. You place the call whenever you want — she always picks up. Fair warning from our testing: the delivery is good but not flawless, and very long calls can drift into repetitive phrasing.

Call her on a commute or debrief your day. Short, frequent calls worked far better than marathons in our month-long test — and voice is still the single feature we'd point to when someone asks what the paid tier is actually for. Note it's metered: calls draw from a monthly token allowance on premium.

Photos made for you

Generated for your character, not stock images.

Ask and she delivers: selfies, outfits, scenarios. Every image is generated for your specific companion, matching the appearance you designed — face, body type, style, setting. No two users get the same girlfriend, so no two get the same photos.

It's the feature that makes a custom character feel real rather than described. You designed her; now she has a camera roll.

Uncensored roleplay

No content walls mid-scene. 18+.

General-purpose chatbots kill the mood with refusals and sudden personality resets. Apps built for adults behave differently: the roleplay goes where you both take it, in character, without the 'as an AI language model' hedging. What still differs between them is where the softer wall sits and how a refusal is delivered — cleanly, in voice, or as a policy notice that ends the scene.

You set the tone and the pace. Slow-burn romance, banter that never escalates, or full 18+ scenes — the platform follows your lead instead of policing it.

A real character builder

From archetype to one-of-one.

Start from 100+ ready-made characters or build yours from scratch: appearance, body type, outfit, voice, personality traits, and backstory. Want a tsundere with a soft spot for astronomy? A deadpan kuudere who plays your favorite game? That's a two-minute setup, not a mod.

The builder is also where the archetypes come alive — see our guides to the tsundere, yandere, kuudere, dandere, and gamer girl for how to tune each one.

Always on, replies in seconds

3am is her prime time too.

Replies land in a second or two, at any hour, on any device — it runs in the browser, so there's no app store download and nothing on your home screen. Discreet by default.

No scheduling, no time zones, no drifting apart. Whenever you show up, she's already there, and she's always glad it's you.

Who has what

Choosing by feature instead of by screenshot

Start with the thing you cannot change later. If you want to design a companion rather than pick one, an app without a builder is a hard stop rather than a trade-off — and one of the three does not have one in any form. If you want a male character, the same applies in reverse.

Then decide how you will actually use it. People who only write stay near the headline price forever, because text is what the subscription covers; people who ask for images and voice meet a second currency, and that meter is where the bill grows. Our walkthrough of how token systems work covers the arithmetic, and what each free tier includes shows how far you get before paying anything.

Judge memory before anything else, because it is the feature that decides whether there is a week six — the method is in our memory test, and it takes four days and costs nothing. After that, read what happens to what you write: five policies, five different answers, and one of them cannot be read without an account.

Everything else — art style, voice count, video clips — is preference. Feature counts on a comparison table do not predict which app you keep, and the full ranked comparison is ordered on that basis rather than on how long the list is.

Frequently asked

Which feature actually matters most?

Memory, and it is not close. Everything else is visible on the first evening; memory is what decides whether the app is still open in week six. It is also the hardest part to build and the easiest to claim, so test it rather than reading the feature list.

Are there free AI companions?

Every app in this category has a free tier, and they differ more than the paid plans do. Free generally covers text chat on a daily cap, while voice, photo generation and full memory depth sit behind the wall. That is enough to rule an app out cheaply, which is what a free tier is for.

How do I tell a real conversation from a scripted one?

Mention a small detail early, then say nothing about it and come back three or four days later. Prompted recall proves nothing — almost every app passes it. Unprompted recall, in the right context, is the whole test.

Do any of these ask for ID before letting me in?

One of the three does: Lovescape requires age verification by document, video selfie or Yoti, citing local law. The other two asked for nothing when checked in August 2026. Barriers in this category are added and removed without announcement, so check from your own country rather than trusting any list.

Can I use one without a subscription?

Indefinitely, yes, on the free tier — the ceiling is lower than the free tier makes it look, and it sits around images, voice and message volume rather than at a hard cut-off. Nothing can charge you before you enter a card; the risk in this category is the automatic renewal after you do.

See it all in one conversation

The feature list only makes sense once she remembers your name. Setup takes about two minutes.
